We started fishing for stripers late in the season, hoping that we could start our project with some fish that might be here for the winter. However the cold Nor’easters began to arrive and early winter settled in. By this time the peanut bunker were beginning to mass up river and where large schools of stripers were getting one more big meal before embarking on their ancient migration to warmers water in the south. We caught, tagged and released three additional fish before the season saw its last fish in the river. The three fish ranged from 21 inches to 26 inches and were named Motz, Bob, and Dick respectively. Motz in honor of our research collaborator at Rutgers to the south, Bob, in honor of our legendary local striper fisherman, and Dick in honor of Dick Anderson, ardent conservationist and fisherman par excellence. Each fish was tracked for a few hours with the mobile unit following release near Marblehead. Winter was upon us the fish only remained in the river for a few days before they left probably following baitfish to warmer climes further south.
