George
Tag:  #11
Length:  24.75"
Date:  9/11/04
Caught By:  Kleinschmidt Associates Electrofishing Boat
Where Caught:  Kennebec River/Lockwood Dam/Waterville
Bait:  None
Tide:  High
Adopted By:
Notes:
George was tagged during our first trip to the Kennebed River.  Kleinschmidt Associates was electrofishing the Kennebec River between Waterville and Augusta to survey for fish species since the Edwards Dam Removal a few years ago.  They gladly gave us any striped bass that we wanted.  Electrofishing is done from a specially rigged, flat bottom boat.  A mild electical current is sent through the water that covers roughly a 10'x10'x10' area.  Fish in this area are briefly stunned and are able to be netted by people on the boat.  The fish are later released unharmed after being counted, weighed, and measured.  Thanks to Chris Yoder, John Audet, and Joe Dembeck for helping us get our first fish to tag in the Kennebec.  Funds used to tag George were obtained through a grant from the Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund.  George was named for George Smith, who is the executive director of S.A.M., the Sportsmans Alliance of Maine

Notes:
We contracted Kleinschmidt Associates for an evening of electrofishing near the dam in Biddeford.  We werent able to catch fish this far inland by hook and line so we utilized electrofishing.  Unfortunately there just werent many fish using the section of river during this time of year, and we were only able to obtain one fish to tag.

Notes:  This fish was caught by Capt. Dave Pecci, of Obsession Charters.  Light tackle and fly fishing for Striped Bass on the Kennebec.  When hiring a guide to fish the Kennebec River, there is no subsitute for experience and locak knowledge. Dave took Jacque and Jon Kyne out fishing in an attempt to tag a few last fish from the Kennebec.  Dave has been a Kennebec fishing guide for a number of years and "hooked us up" with some taggable fish from the Kennebec River.  This fish was named after Dave's wife Barbara.

Date:  9/26/05
Caught By:  Tim Arienti
Where Caught:  Kennebec River/BIW
Bait:  Bloodworm
Tide:  Outgoing
Adopted By:  University of New England
Notes:  We were able to tag two fish in the Kennebec in the fall of 2005.  We deployed a hydrophone just upstream of Bath Iron Works (BIW), in hopes of determining if fish were leaving the river in the fall, or staying for the winter.  Unfortunately the Kennebec River had an unexpected flood in October and some of our gear and all of our data was destroyed.  We now hope to pick up these two fish in the Saco, or else have someone catch them so we can find out where they have gone since we tagged them.
